There really should be a simple device out there that does this and the cheapest i can lay my hands on is a £200 super machine. So, what's happening, you have moved to a country like Germany or Australia from the UK , you get a great picture through your aerial but no sound. The differences between the various PAL's out there like PAL I ,PAL M,PAL N,PAL B/G is purely the way the sound is carried or the frequency it is set to.

A simple solution is to buy the local hard drive/dvd recorder/video  recorder in your new country which you probably would anyway and use the tuner in it to choose the channels ( you must make sure that it has a remote so you can flick between the channels). The VCR/DVD player becomes your tuner but you output via the AV outputs at the back of it. By bypassing the tuner completely and avoiding any contact with the aerial leads on your TV , you will be able to watch the programs in full colour and sound.

A neater solution is this DVD recorder here, it has PAL B/G or PAL I tuner as a menu option and you will be able to record your favorite programs as an added bonus. Why the overkill? Well, tuners are very hard to get right now and cost more than the DVD player!i
